Chicago Cardinal George says MAP sometimes acceptable; prefers to
address conscience issue rather than fight contraceptive coverage in
Obamacare takeover <cid:part4.06050301.08010605 at pfli.org>
**Special to PFLI E-News©
Chicago, IL -- 30 Mar 2010

*On Saturday March 27, the Archdiocesan Pro-Life Office in Chicago, IL
sponsored an all day conference called /Caritas in Veritate. /Some
questions were posed to Chicago's Catholic leader, Cardinal George,
during the Q&A at the end of the day. While the session itself was
taped, the Q&A session was not. An on the scene source, who wishes to
remain anonymous, stated that:

Cardinal George spoke on /Caritas in Veritate/.

1)He (Cardinal) agreed that the so-called "morning after pill" (MAP) may
be given in case of rape if given before ovulation determined by an
ovulation test to be sure that the likelihood of the contraceptive
effect is more probable than the abortifacient effect. This mimics the
position taken by the USCCB and the Catholic Health Association,
contrary to papal pronunciations on the matter of abortifacients whose
purpose and/or intent is to destroy a new life.

2) The questioner was not sure if he (Cardinal) understood his second
question which had to do with sexually active women taking hormonal
contraception for therapeutic reasons. Perhaps the Cardinal failed to
think about the abortifacient effect and said that it was "OK".

3)(a little bit late...) What has the USCCB done to prevent federal
funding of contraception? He (Cardinal) said that contraception is
accepted culturally so they support conscience rights instead of trying
to prevent federal funding.

The Cardinal's office was contacted for comment and spokesman
Mary-Louise Kurey, director of the respect life office for the
Archdiocese, stated: "...I read your email regarding the conference
hosted by the my office, and your quotes from Cardinal George are
remarkably inaccurate. If you wish to speak with me about it, please
call me on my cell..."

PFLI contact Kurey again this morning again and got an out of office
message. Her original reply also contained what PFLI can only surmise is
a veiled threat or CYA: "Please do not go to press; otherwise I'll have
to issue some kind of clarification and I would hate to see the
credibility of PFLI tainted."

Given that is the first contact PFLI has had from the Archdiocese in 26
years, including our conspicuous fight against abortoholic ex-Governor
Rod "Slobodan" Blagojevich's /diktat/ against pharmacists of conscience
from 2005 to 2008, PFLI finds it an odd meet-n-greet.

Developing....

*PFLI Note: */Be assured the current assault on the Catholic Church by
the drive-by state run media (e.g. PMS-NBC, NY Times, etc) is due to the
Church coming out officially against the Obamacare takeover of the US
health system.

MSNBC LIBELS THE POPE*

Catholic League president Bill Donohue accuses MSNBC of libeling Pope
Benedict XVI:

Go to the home page of MSNBC <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/> and click on
"World News." From there click on "Americas." Next click on the article,
"Losing Their Religion? Catholicism in Turmoil." Scroll down and in the
"Click for Related Content" section there is an article entitled, "Pope
Describes Touching Boys: I Went Too Far." Clicking on this piece takes
the reader to an article about a homosexual German priest who had sex
with males in the 1980s. /It says absolutely nothing about the pope. Yet
MSNBC paints Pope Benedict XVI as a child molester in the tease to the
article./

A retraction, and a sincere apology, are in order. They should also
investigate how this happened and who is responsible.

Judge Dismisses Case Challenging Parental Notification Law in Illinois;
Law Will Not Go Into Effect Until After Appeal

Thomas More Society Attorneys, present as 'Friends of the Court,'
Applaud Dismissal

CHICAGO, March 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- Today in Cook County Court, a
judge dismissed the case challenging the constitutionality of the
Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act, while imposing a stay of his
decision for 60 days to allow the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
time to file an appeal. Attorneys from the Thomas More Society appeared
as "friends of the court" today in Court as Judge Daniel Riley delivered
his ruling.

"Today's ruling represents a great step toward ending underage secret
abortions in Illinois. This written decision represents the first time
an Illinois court has upheld the Parental Notice Act of 1995 against the
ACLU's challenge," said Peter Breen, executive director and legal
counsel at the Thomas More Society. "We look forward to the day that
abortion providers are made to respect the rights of parents to know
before their daughters are taken for abortions."

The ACLU is expected to appeal. On appeal, the Thomas More Society will
renew its request to intervene in the case to defend the contention that
the Illinois Constitution does not include a right to abortion.

Thomas More Society attorneys conceived the idea to revive the dormant
Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act in 2005 and led the successful
effort to have the Illinois Supreme Court issue the required appeal
rules in 2006. Since then, the Thomas More Society has fought to defend
the law from attacks by the ACLU and other opponents, who attempted to
defeat the law by arguing that the Illinois Constitution of 1970
included a strong right to abortion, even though abortion was virtually
illegal in Illinois under the 1970 state constitution. Judge Riley ruled
that the Illinois Constitution does include a right to abortion, but
that parental notice is constitutional because the Illinois right is not
broader than the federal right.

/As a public interest law firm, the Thomas More Society is a nonprofit,
tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, supported solely by private
donations. Visit www.thomasmoresociety.org

Bishop Vasa: The "Positively Evil" Health Care Bill

*
3/27/2010 6:43:00 PM
By John Quinn -Pewsitter.com

In an address to his Baker Diocesan Newspaper, Bishop Robert Vasa
explains why one cannot support the Health Care Bill, which funds
abortion, even if one believes enormous good benefits would result. It
appears the Bishop is indirectly answering the position of Sr. Carol
Keehan, President of the Catholic Health Association, that even with the
abortion issue the good outweighs the bad.

The Bishop writes that not only is such a position "a serious
understatement," but also a "serious error."

"If they were further to claim that the plan has so many other good
features that an insistence on the elimination of abortion provisions is
really a demand for an unrealistic "perfection" then they are in serious
error."

To clarify his point he uses the example of the importance of fidelity
in marriage.

"No one would claim that a fiancee's insistence on fidelity ... is an
enemy of an otherwise "good" relationship. Absurd! No one would counsel
a fiancee to ignore the present infidelities ... on the grounds that he
or she is really a good, well-intentioned person. No, the infidelity
destroys the possibility of an authentic relationship."

No matter which side of the fence you are on for authentic health care
reform, as a Catholic "the provision of abortion funding or abortion
expansion destroys the very heart of health care." Which means that one
in good conscience cannot support the Health Care Bill. How can true
social justice include Satan's number one attack on our society today,
consisting of murdering innocent little babies?

Sometimes when writing about such controversial topics one might water
down what is true, but Bishop Vasa is very clear when he says, "a plan
that includes funds for the direct and intentional killing of innocent
human beings is much more than imperfect, it is nothing short of
positively evil."

Although the Bishop did not mention Mr. Bart Stupak by name he does
refer to his misconceived thought process. "I do not at all believe it
is legitimate to conditionally support such a plan even if there is a
"promise" that the objections to abortion will be worked out once the
plan is approved."

Bishop Vasa concludes by saying , "besides involving the federal
government in the business of killing pre-born children, such a policy
would coerce men and women to pay for a procedure they find absolutely
abhorrent."

Las Vegas Sun
The language in an initiative petition that seeks to ban abortions in
Nevada is so vague that voters would never understand the consequences,
the American Civil Liberties Union says. The brief, written by Lee
Rowland, northern coordinator for the ACLU, asked the Nevada Supreme
Court on Friday to keep the issue off the ballot. The court has set oral
arguments for April 6 in Las Vegas. A group called Personhood Nevada
wants to add the following to the Nevada Constitution: "In the great
state of Nevada, the term 'person' applies to every human being."
Rowland says the proponents want the word "person" to mean fertilized
eggs, embryos and fetuses, which he says would stop abortions.
