Tempers flare as abortion issue threatens to take down health care overhaul

By Kathleen Gilbert

WASHINGTON, DC, March 4, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com
<http://www.lifesitenews.com/>) - At the same time as President Obama
has stepped up the pressure on Congress to "get it done" on health care
reform, Rep. Bart Stupak, the author of the amendment banning abortion
funding in the House health care bill, has issued a challenge of his own.

"Mr. president, put it in there," the Michigan Democrat urged, referring
to placing his amendment into the Senate bill, in an appearance on FOX
Business.

Stupak pointed out that every poll on the topic of public funding for
abortion in the U.S. has found the majority in favor of his funding
restrictions. Therefore, he said, the president should show the same
level of openness to his amendment that he boasted he had shown to some
Republican ideas that were included in the bill.

"If we're trying to reflect the will of the American people," he said,
"this certainly is one amendment where you can show your flexibility and
actually do what the American people want: no public funding for abortion."

Stupak also asserted that, "in its present form, the Senate health care
bill is going nowhere in the House of Representatives." On Thursday,
Stupak confirmed to NBC's Chris Matthews that about a dozen lawmakers
who voted for the House bill would kill the abortion-expanding Senate
version if it lacked his amendment.

Shifts in the House demographic since passing the House health bill last
year means Democrat leaders need to net about four more votes from
members of their own party who had previously voted against the House
bill, to pass the Senate bill - in addition to winning over those
dissatisfied with the upper chamber's vastly more liberal version.

Tempers also appear to be rising elsewhere on Capitol Hill: House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday shot back at the notion that she lacked
the votes to push the Senate bill through the House, and expressed
frustration when faced with the abortion issue.

"Let me say this: This is not about abortion! This is a bill about
providing quality, affordable health care for all Americans," Pelosi
said Thursday.

Capitol Hill insiders cited by the Financial Times indicated that Pelosi
may rely on threats to strip uncooperative Democrats of committee
chairmanships.

Stupak's challenge came the same day President Obama held a press
conference to push the unpopular bill to the finish line, complete with
a backdrop of white-coated individuals whom he introduced as medical
professionals "who understand how important it is for us to make much
needed changes in our health care system."

"Everything there is to say about health care has been said, and just
about everybody has said it," the president declared, hinting that
Democrats were "bring[ing] this journey to a close."

"I, therefore, ask leaders in both houses of Congress to finish their
work and schedule a vote in the next few weeks," he said. "Let's get it
done." As expected, Obama urged an "up or down" vote on health care
reform, arguing in favor of using the controversial reconciliation
tactic to bypass a GOP filibuster in the Senate.

Yet pundits quickly skewered the president after news broke that Obama
had nominated Scott Matheson, brother of Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT), to
the US Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Rep. Matheson was among a
handful of undecided lawmakers Obama invited to the White House
Wednesday night to woo them into supporting the health care bill.

In light of the nomination, Allahpundit of the Hot Air blog recalled
Obama's words at the press conference: "I will do everything in my power
to make the case for reform."

"And so he will, so he will," the blogger jabbed.

*Angie Jackson had an abortion last week. And broadcast it live online. *

Shortly after swallowing the chemical abortion drug, [*Mifepristone*,
sometimes referred to by its antiquated experimental name] RU 486, the
27-year-old single mom began posting live updates on Twitter and
YouTube. More than 119,000 watched her first video. "Um, yeah, I'm
having an abortion right now. It's not that bad. It's not that scary,"
she said, smiling broadly into the camera. Angie said her goal in going
public was to demystify abortion.

But over the next few days, Angie's updates increasingly detailed
bleeding, dizziness and severe pain, along with an admission that she
quickly exhausted her first supply of painkillers. Though the Florida
woman said she pursued abortion because of health risks, the irony is
the abortion itself could have killed her and will likely leave
long-term side effects. *[Mifepristone] is far from safe.* At least 12
women died after taking the human pesticide, and more than 600 adverse
effects have been reported to the FDA, including heart attacks,
hemorrhaging, and surgery to repair damage.

Many women also say the convenience of having an abortion in their own
home is, in fact, a lonely experience, so perhaps we shouldn't be
surprised people like Angie are coping by turning to social media for
support. But it /should/ shock our senses that the *murder of preborn
babies is shouted, even celebrated, from Internet rooftops* --- that a
precious young life was nothing but a "squatter," "parasite" and "tumor"
to Angie, who at one point exploded: "I want to KILL THIS THING!"

This type of desensitizing can only be a *desperate attempt to smother
the truth*, but I pray that Angie's brazen words will be used for good,
prompting others to think through the life issues and perhaps even speak
out for the first time.

Her story is certainly a startling reminder that we must work harder
than ever to surround young men and women with love and help when and
where they need it most. We encourage you to support our own efforts to
use social media to *promote life* by joining our Facebook group

news that affects the pro-life community and tools for sharing

Please help us save more precious lives by getting the word out online,
offline and everywhere in between. Thanks.

Abortion and the Catholic Church: Randall Terry Leads Delegation to
Vatican from March 17-24

Participants will ask Vatican Officials: "Do Vatican Officials stand by
the words of Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) to American
bishops in 2004?"

Also: Bishop Rene Henry Gracida writes letter of introduction,
encouraging Vatican Officials to meet with Mr. Terry and The Vanguard of
St. Catherine of Siena. See letter:

WASHINGTON, March 5 /Christian Newswire/ -- In 2004, Joseph Cardinal
Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (now
Pope Benedict XVI), issued an instruction to American bishops that a
"Catholic politician" who is "consistently campaigning and voting for
permissive abortion and euthanasia laws..." must be "denied the
Eucharist." See Cardinal Ratzinger's two page instruction at:
www.ahumbleplea.com/Docs/WorthinessToReceiveHoly Communion.pdf
<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103139865493&s=16890&e=001pI7O5-6kcp_MMy-LuunVFiTn9q8UmgWimcsFvN8PCAaXMjuhGPJ05qara8jpYEDchcuogGGQi_etx4RIAMHxxZIAx2uDJ2e0RRoEYrbnjIz3dyT2a9I85RPQgcnnr-VEjgvTvMjuRBkoFuuRrh1wkscpcydXJzT9N2kiSusi46Namyb5NzQ2yg==>

In his clear instruction, entitled,

Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion

General Principles

Cardinal Ratzinger stated:

5. Regarding the grave sin of abortion or euthanasia, when a person's
formal cooperation becomes manifest (understood, in the case of a
Catholic politician, as his consistently campaigning and voting for
permissive abortion and euthanasia laws), his Pastor should meet with
him, instructing him about the Church's teaching, informing him that he
is not to present himself for Holy Communion until he brings to an end
the objective situation of sin, and warning him that he will otherwise
be denied the Eucharist.

6. When "these precautionary measures have not had their effect or in
which they were not possible," and the person in question, with
obstinate persistence, still presents himself to receive the Holy
Eucharist, "the minister of Holy Communion must refuse to distribute it"
(cf. Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts Declaration "Holy
Communion and Divorced, Civilly Remarried Catholics" [2002], nos. 3-4).
This decision, properly speaking, is not a sanction or a penalty. Nor is
the minister of Holy Communion passing judgement on the person's
subjective guilt, but rather is reacting to the person's public
unworthiness to receive Holy Communion due to an objective situation of
sin.

Members of The Vanguard of St. Catherine of Siena will ask for an
affirmation from Vatican officials about Cardinal Ratzinger's (now Pope
Benedict) statement regarding Communion and Catholic politicians who
promote child killing.

Randall Terry states:

"Our quest is for a simple answer from every Vatican official we meet:
'Do you stand by the words of Cardinal Ratzinger in 2004? Is this the
teaching of the Church?'"

Background:

In March of 2009, the Vanguard made their first journey to Rome to talk
with Prefects and representatives about the crisis in the episcopacy of
the Catholic Church in America concerning child killing, and the
reception of the Eucharist by politicians who promote child killing.

Vanguard representatives delivered Oves Sine Pastore [Sheep Without a
Shepherd]; A Plea to Vatican Officials to Restore Faithful Catholic
Leadership in America, and urged Vatican Officials to take specific
actions regarding American bishops, and to change the process by which
new bishops were selected.
