*Abortion Issue Feared as Top Health Bill Killer*
Obama to signal support for reconciliation tactic

By Kathleen Gilbert

WASHINGTON, DC, March 3, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com
<http://www.lifesitenews.com/>) - Government funding of abortion, the
issue that has proven the stickiest in each of the major turns of the
health care bill, has again arisen as the top clear enemy to Democrats
attempting to ram the abortion-expanding measure through, reports NPR.

Hyde-amendment language banning all abortion funding in the House health
bill was one of the key concessions made to win conservative Democrats
over to the bill last year. Therefore, majority leaders now fear those
crucial votes will be lost when presented with the Senate bill, crafted
under Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, which lacks the Hyde language.

Because of this disparity, reports NPR's Julie Rovner, "the abortion
problem may be too difficult to surmount."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday attempted to dismiss the Reid
bill's abortion problem. "I talked to the Catholic bishops about this
.... there is no federal funding of abortion in this bill," she said.

But Richard Doerflinger of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, which
has lobbied aggressively against the bill's abortion expansion,
immediately shot back
<http://www.lifesitenews.com/admintools/newsadmin/%20http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2010/mar/10030204.html>,
"We do not know how anyone who has spoken to the bishops could conclude
that the Senate health care bill does not fund abortions."

Democrats have laid out a game plan that would require the House to
discard their bill altogether, and instead pass the Senate version
unamended. A later bill, intended to bridge gaps between the two bill
versions, would then be offered to appease House Democrats dissatisfied
with the more liberal Senate version. To take advantage of the budget
reconciliation process, the second measure would be deemed a "budget"
bill, and could therefore be passed in the Senate with only 51 votes.

While pro-life Democrats in the House may jump ship, the Wall Street
Journal and other sources report that a handful of Democrats who voted
"no" on the House bill are now undecided. Their votes could be just
enough to tip the scales back in Pelosi's favor.

Despite the daunting odds, leaders are hoping to push the Reid bill
through the House by March 19 and finish health care reform before the
March 29 Spring recess, according to a Democratic memo cited by Inside
Health Policy's Julian Pecquet and Amy Lotven.

According to ABC's Jake Tapper, President Obama is expected to signal
support for ramming the Senate bill fix through via the controversial
reconciliation process - dubbed by some the "nuclear option" - by
calling for an "up or down vote" on health care reform.

Republicans continue to object that, while their own party has used the
reconciliation process before, doing so to pass a bundle of compromises
meant to squeeze health care reform through Congress would be to
flagrantly abuse Senate rules.

"This use of reconciliation to jam through this legislation, against the
will of the American people, would be unprecedented in scope," said Sen.
Orrin Hatch (R-UT) in a Washington Post column Tuesday. "And the havoc
wrought would threaten our system of checks and balances, corrode the
legislative process, degrade our system of government and damage the
prospects of bipartisanship."

The GOP has already cast a wary eye towards Senate parliamentarian Alan
Frumin, who has the final say on whether the use of reconciliation is
legitimate.

"I think clearly the majority leader has [Frumin's] ear, and I've got
concerns," said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), according to Politico. "I think
if he does not look at that very careful - reconciliation is supposed to
be very narrowly defined, large legislative things don't seem to fit in
those parameters - I would think that reconciliation would make or break
the perception of his objectivity."

When Frumin illegally cut off a Republican stall tactic in December,
DeMint warned to the Washington Times that the majority party had "a
parliamentarian in their back pocket."

Pro-Lifers Mourn the Death of ND88's Linda Schmidt; Prosecutor Failed to
Drop Charges Despite Proof of Terminal Cancer

TMS renews call for Notre Dame President Fr. Jenkins to prefer human
rights to property rights and ask the prosecutor to drop all charges
against the ND 88

CHICAGO, March 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- Tom Brejcha, president and
chief counsel of Chicago's Thomas More Society--the national public
interest law firm whose legal team is defending the Notre Dame 88
<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103133023255&s=16890&e=001GIU2EeZoxYl82wRAEWsRoRcynxOZ7LCD5EZjkoc43TNnLV_2cZORsNDDQ3wIKaJSZtF9XLCeLAQu3tNk8_nc1BUG39kEpMAF5h7fiYXysZNjtUFyCaGQ2Q==>--is
sad to report the death of ND88 client Linda Schmidt who died after a
courageous battle with terminal cancer.

"It is with a heavy heart that we report that Linda Schmidt died early
last night. While she will be missed by her family and loved ones, as a
woman of tremendous faith she will no doubt spend eternity with our
Lord," stated Brejcha. "But our grief at losing this dedicated pro-life
heroine is greater given the grim truth that she lived her final days
under this cloud of criminal charges instigated by Notre Dame, which
remained pending even as she departed this life."

Tom Dixon, lead attorney for the ND 88 and a Notre Dame Law alumnus,
first sought a voluntary dismissal of the charges against Mrs. Schmidt
on February 9, 2010. Late Friday, February 19, St. Joseph County's
prosecutor requested documentation proving the claim of illness. Medical
documentation proving that Mrs. Schmidt had terminal cancer was provided
to the prosecutor's office by early morning February 23. It was also
confirmed that Mrs. Schmidt had been given less than two months to live.
To date, there has been no response or communication from the
prosecutor's office. "This sad turn of events puts a very human face on
the plight of these courageous men and women, most 55 or older, whose
lives have been turned topsy-turvy with their futures left in limbo
because they had the courage to assert their civil rights and stand for
truth," observed Brejcha.

Repeated overtures have also been made to the Rev. John Jenkins, C.S.C.,
president of Notre Dame, urging that he request that the charges be
dropped. "Sadly, our requests have been met with legalistic,
disingenuous responses that attempt to pass the buck from Fr. Jenkins to
the prosecutor. While only the prosecutor can move the court to drop the
charges, those charges were initiated by Notre Dame, whose campus police
exercised state powers by arresting the ND88 and hauling them to the
county jail," Brejcha said. "As the crimes charged were all for alleged
trespassing in violation of Notre Dame's property rights, there is
little doubt that the prosecutor will drop the charges if the 'campus
landowner' -- Notre Dame -- asks for dismissal. Once again, we urge
Notre Dame to put human rights ahead of property rights and publicly
request that the prosecutor drop these obnoxious charges."

A Polish pro-life group has sparked controversy by using pictures of
Hitler and a bloody and torn foetus in a billboard campaign designed to
ensure Poles adhere to the country's strict abortion laws. The
provocative images, which appeared in the western city of Poznan as a
part of a promised nationwide campaign, also carry the slogan "Abortion
for Poles: introduced by Hitler, March 9, 1943." Fundacja Pro, the
organisation behind the billboard, said that it wanted to remind Poles
that abortion was first introduced to Poland during the Second World War
by the country's Nazi occupiers as a means of limiting the population of
a people they deemed inferior.

Abortion kills a living child. But this simple fact is often too easy to
ignore since the victims of abortion - even when they survive - rarely
ever speak about it. But one victim who did survive an abortion and who
is set to address the Canadian March for Life Youth Conference this May
14 in Ottawa recently shared her thoughts about the issue with
LifeSiteNews.com (LSN). Melissa Ohden's biological mother had an early
induction abortion in 1977. However, Melissa was later born alive -- a
not uncommon occurrence in this type of abortion - and showed too many
signs of life to go unnoticed by nurses attending the abortion.
