*ALASKA PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT LAUNCH*

*Washington, DC (02 November 2009)* --  Alaska residents have launched a 
petition drive that could make the state the first in the nation to 
recognize human rights for all human beings.       

Personhood Alaska sponsor Christopher Kurka is coordinating the drive to 
get 30,000 Alaska voters to sign the petition before it appears on the 
ballot.           

The personhood movement seeks to recognize all human beings from the 
biological beginning of their development as persons and as such, 
entitled to equal protection under the law. Alaska is the eighth state 
to launch a campaign for a personhood amendment to the state constitution.

The other states are Missouri, California, Colorado, Florida, Montana, 
Michigan and Nevada.

"America's last frontier could be America's first state to recognize 
human rights for all," said Judie Brown, president of American Life 
League. "This amendment campaign is a historic step toward real social 
justice in Alaska and the nation."

*WASHINGTON --- In an extraordinary call to Catholics to prevent health 
care reform from being derailed by the abortion lobby, the United Sates 
Conference of Catholic Bishops has sent bulletin inserts to almost 
19,000 parishes across the country.*

* "Health care reform should be about saving lives, not destroying 
them,"** the insert states. It urges readers to contact Senate leaders 
so they support efforts to "incorporate longstanding policies against 
abortion funding and in favor of conscience rights" in health reform 
legislation.*

* "If these serious concerns are not addressed, the final bill should be 
opposed,"** it adds.*

*The insert highlights the Stupak Amendment from Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) 
that, it states, "addresses essential pro-life concerns on abortion 
funding and conscience rights."*

* "Help ensure that the Rule for the bill allows a vote on the 
amendment," the insert states. "If these serious concerns are not 
addressed, the final bill should be opposed."*

*A dramatic ad of a pregnant woman notes that the Hyde Amendment, which 
passed in 1976, has prevented federal funds from paying for elective 
abortions. Yet healthcare reform bills that are advancing violate this

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) unveiled the House health care reform 
bill and in expectation that they will show up in parishes in early 
November. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the USCCB; 
Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, chair of the bishops' Committee 
on Pro-life Activities; Bishop John Wester of Salt Lake City, chair of 
the Committee on Migration; and Bishop William Murphy of Rockville, 
Centre, New York, chair of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human 
Development urged fellow bishops to promote this campaign in their 
dioceses.*

other people's abortions via health care either. This impasse on the

Catholic Church by saying, "Congressman Patrick Kennedy's statement 
about the Catholic Church's position on health care reform is 
irresponsible and ignorant of the facts. But the Congressman is correct 
in stating that 'he can't understand.' He got that part right."

"Catholic moral tradition teaches that health care is a basic human 
right, essential to protecting human life and dignity," the bishops said 
in their letter. "Much-needed reform of our health care system must be 
pursued in ways that serve the life and dignity of all, never in ways 
that undermine or violate these fundamental values. We will work 
tirelessly to remedy these central problems and help pass real reform 
that clearly protects the life, dignity and health of all."
