*Pharmacist Conscience Coalition** (PCC)*

*Dedicated to defending the First Amendment rights of all pharmacists to
the free exercise of their conscience in all their professional activities.*

A new group of healthcare workers, concerned with conscience issues, has
been started up in Alberta. "Concerned Healthcare workers for Moral
Conscience" is the group, which basically has been an extension of
"Concerned pharmacists for conscience". They have started up because of
the concern brought about by the new regulations by College of
pharmacists and other healthcare regulating bodies which are playing
down the importance of conscience issues of the healthcare workers they
regulate. It is being coordinated by Dennis and Lisa Nawrocki. This is
the premier issue of their newletter. If you would like to join this
group please contact Dennis or Lisa at dnawrocki at telus.net.

Issue **# 1 April 2009***

*/Welcome to the premier issue of our newsletter. We would like to
thank you for your interest in protecting conscience and those affected
by the erosion of conscience in our society. /*

*Introduction:* South of our border a change is occurring that fills
those of us with conscience objections with trepidation. "Thank
goodness we live in Canada", may be our thoughts as we relax into our
familiar complacency. However, are we truly immune to the illness of
erosion to our fundamental freedoms?

Last fall the College of Pharmacists of Alberta made a
provision removing the moral right of a pharmacist to decline referring
a patient for a chemical abortion. As well, the Alberta College of
Physicians and Surgeons drafted new standards of practice requiring all
doctors to refer a patient and provide information regarding chemical
and surgical abortions. Unfortunately, many of us were not aware such
decisions were being made, no doubt due to the lack of fanfare and the
subtle Canadianized approach to magnanimous change.

*/Concerned Healthcare Workers for Moral Conscience/* has been
formed to collectively stand against these and other changes that deny a
healthcare workers right to conscientious objection in the workplace.
The lives of vulnerable populations served by these professionals in
Alberta are at serious risk. Technological advances in medicine mixed
with the societal push for easy access to abortion and assisted suicide
make it imperative that healthcare employees with moral conscience
objections are allowed to make professional judgements in protection of
human life. Lives of the elderly, chronically ill, physically and
intellectually impaired and the pre-born children will be lost, if we as
healthcare workers are disciplined by our colleges, fired from our jobs
and in other ways prevented from exercising our duty to protect lives
with our medical arts.

As a former nurse in Alberta, I developed a desire to help alleviate
suffering and prevent unnecessary death--not cause it. I was drawn to
the healthcare field with ideals and principles, and asking me to ignore
God-given conscience would be to ask me to deny my very humanity.

What separates man from animals is free will and a conscience
to exercise that will in the better interest of our fellow man.
Eventually, without moral conscience as a compass guiding our society,
the erosion of our humanness will lead to anarchy.

Lisa Nawrocki

*Thanks to all* who sent letters and or phoned the Alberta Colleges of
Physicians, Pharmacists and Nurses regarding the changes to standards of
practice and or codes of ethics outlined in our last e-mail. The
College of Physicians and Surgeons received more than 250 responses to
their draft standards of practice against the proposed changes to
implementing mandatory referral for abortions. This shows the impact of
getting involved to create a larger voice affirming the need for moral
conscience clauses in the healthcare field. (see attachment for more
information)

*Thank you to Rob Taylor* (pharmacist) for attending and representing
pharmacists for moral conscience at the recent Alberta College of
Pharmacists council meeting April 3,2009. Due to overwhelming
responses from pharmacists and concerned citizens, the college has
decided to retain a provision for moral conscience objection in its
revised code of ethics. Again, we can not stress enough the importance
of all concerned expressing their dismay at those proposed changes.

*Thank you to Gordon Self*, Vice President, Mission, Ethics and
Spirituality of Covenant Health for meeting with us to share ideas and
concerns.
