For pro-lifers, there may be one advantage to the economic crisis. So
far, it is forcing states to reevaluate their financial commitment to
Planned Parenthood. In at least two states, regions have dramatically
slashed their funding for abortion clinics because of growing budget
shortfalls. Last month, Sarasota County in Florida dropped the annual
$25,000 it allocated to Planned Parenthood for the last ten years.
Sarasota Commissioner Paul Mercier said the county was always divided
over funding the nation's biggest abortion provider. This year, the
county simply couldn't afford the controversy. And, as Mercier said,
"They don't need the money." Last week, the organization took an even
bigger hit in Georgia, where the state dropped Planned Parenthood's
$420,000 annual contract with Fulton County. Although radical women's
groups are bemoaning the cuts, Planned Parenthood isn't likely to
suffer. The group, which makes about $1 billion, rakes in more than
enough revenue from private foundations, donors, and client fees to
cover the losses.
