*US Bishops Discredit Abortoholic Pelosi's Heretical Claims*

August 26, 2008--The transcript of an MSNBC interview between apparent
apostate Nancy Pelosi and Tom Brokaw has been recently released, where
Pelosi tried to politically manipulate constant Catholic Church teaching
on the Sanctity of Human Life to support her abortoholic agenda
(transcript below).

Her incorrect claims caused an immediate outcry over concerns of scandal
to the Church, and the United States Bishops Conference has a response
<http://www.usccb.org/> published on the homepage of the USCCB web site,
stating:

"The Church has always taught that human life deserves respect from
its very beginning and that procured abortion is a grave moral evil.
In the Middle Ages, uninformed and inadequate theories about
embryology led some theologians to speculate that specifically human
life capable of receiving an immortal soul may not exist until a few
weeks into pregnancy. While in canon law these theories led to a
distinction in penalties between very early and later abortions, the
Church's moral teaching never justified or permitted abortion at any
    stage of development."

"Catholic" Speaker Pelosi Denies that Catholicism Condemns Abortion

By John Jalsevac

WASHINGTON, August 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an appearance on the
NBC program Meet the Press on Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a
self-professed Catholic, denied that the Catholic Church condemns abortion.

Referring to Barack Obama's now-notorious answer to Pastor Rick Warren
to the question of when life begins, Meet the Press moderator Tom Brokaw
asked Pelosi, "Senator Obama saying the question of when life begins is
above his pay grade...If he were to come to you and say, 'Help me out
here, Madame Speaker. When does life begin?' what would you tell him?"

Pelosi responded by sidestepping the question, appealing to her Catholic
faith as the source of her uncertainty.

"I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue
that I have studied for a long time," she said. "And what I know is,
over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make
that definition. And Senator - St. Augustine said at three months. We
don't know."

Pelosi then said that in her view the question of when life begins is a
non-issue in the debate on abortion.

"The point is, is that it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right
to choose. Roe v. Wade talks about very clear definitions of when the
child - first trimester, certain considerations; second trimester; not
so third trimester. There's very clear distinctions. This isn't about
abortion on demand, it's about a careful, careful consideration of all
factors and - to - that a woman has to make with her doctor and her god."

Brokaw continued to press Pelosi on the question, observing, "The
Catholic Church at the moment feels very strongly that it... begins at
the point of conception."

Pelosi again side-stepped the question, suggesting that the Church's
current position is only a recent position and that "over the history of
the church, this is an issue of controversy."

The President of the Catholic League, Bill Donohue, responded to
Pelosi's statements on Meet the Press, observing that the Church's
position on abortion is clear beyond any doubt. "Here is what the
Catechism of the Catholic Church says: 'Human life must be respected and
protected absolutely from the moment of conception.'"

He continued, "It also says, 'Since the first century the Church has
affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has
not changed and remains unchangeable.' Looks like Pelosi didn't study
the subject long enough. But not to worry: We are sending her a copy of
Catholicism for Dummies today."

Kathryn Jean Lopez, the online editor of National Review, quipped, "It's
the blind leading the blind in that party if the 'ardent practicing
Catholic' doesn't care when life begins, only that women have the choice
to do what they 'choose' (sometimes, thanks to people like Pelosi, not
aware of what their choices actually are) whether it's life or not."

Pelosi concluded her appearance by contradicting another doctrine of the
Catholic Church by advocating contraception. Contraception is officially
condemned by the Catholic Church as "intrinsically evil."

"My Republican colleagues do not support contraception. If you want to
reduce the number of abortions, and we all do, we must - it would
behoove you to support family planning and, and contraception, you would
think," she said. "But that is not the case."

"Catholic" Speaker Pelosi Denies that Catholicism Condemns Abortion

WASHIGNTON, DC, August 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The selection of
Delaware Senator Joseph Biden as the vice presidential running mate of
Barack Obama poses a major challenge for American Catholics, according
to Fidelis, a national Catholic-based advocacy group.

Fidelis warned late last month that the choice of a pro-abortion
Catholic as a vice presidential candidate would offend many Catholics
who have struggled with the scandal of prominent pro-abortion Catholic
politicians like Senator Biden.

Fidelis President Brian Burch commented, "Barack Obama has re-opened a
wound among American Catholics by picking a pro-abortion Catholic
politician. The American bishops have made clear that Catholic political
leaders must defend the dignity of every human person, including the
unborn. Sadly, Joe Biden's tenure in the United States Senate has been
marked by steadfast support for legal abortion."

During the recent Democratic primary campaign Biden said: "I am a
long-standing supporter of Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose."

In 2004, John Kerry's support for abortion sparked a nationwide
controversy over whether Catholics who support legal abortion can
receive Communion. The debate was re-activated in 2007 when several
bishops criticized Rudy Giuliani, also a pro-abortion Catholic.

"Now everywhere Biden campaigns, we'll have this question of whether a
pro-abortion Catholic can receive Communion. Senator Biden is an
unrepentant supporter of abortion in direct opposition to the Church he
claims as his own. Selecting a pro-abortion Catholic is a slap in the
face to Catholic voters," said Burch.

*Biden's own bishop, Bishop Michael Saltarelli of Wilmington, Del., has
said that the issues pertaining to the sanctity of human life are the
"great civil rights issues of this generation."

Bishop Saltarelli denounced the notion that politicians can 'personally
oppose' abortion, but refuse to pass laws protecting the unborn.*

*"No one today would accept this statement from any public servant: 'I
am personally opposed to human slavery and racism but will not impose my
personal conviction in the legislative arena.' Likewise, none of us
should accept this statement from any public servant: 'I am personally
opposed to abortion but will not impose my personal conviction in the
legislative arena,'" said Bishop Saltarelli.*

*In fact, Bishop Saltarelli made clear that pro-abortion Catholic
politicians should refrain from receiving the Eucharist.*

"The promotion of abortion by any Catholic is a grave and serious
matter. Objectively, according to the constant teaching of the
Scriptures and the Church,* it would be more spiritually beneficial for
such a person to refrain from receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. I
ask Catholics in this position to have the integrity to respect the
Eucharist, Catholic teaching and the Catholic faithful."*

Burch concluded: "The American bishops have instructed Catholic voters
to consider many issues, but have characterized the defense of human
life as 'foundational' and have explained that the issue has a special
claim on the conscience of the Catholic voter. This means that a
political candidate like Biden, because of his strong support for
abortion rights, forfeits any claim for support despite his views on
other issues like health care and the economy."

*Speaker Nancy Pelosi's "Teachable Moment"*

http://catholicsagainstjoebiden.blogspot.com/2008/08/speaker-nancy-pelosis-teachable-moment.html

Yesterday, Catholidoxy
<http://catholidoxy.blogspot.com/2008/08/pelosi-on-mtp-catholic-tradition-vague.html>
and Amy Welborn <http://amywelborn.wordpress.com/2008/08/24/ardent/>
responded with excellent posts to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's abysmal display
of ignorance of Catholic teaching on /Meet The Press/
<http://thepublicsquare.blogspot.com/2008/08/nancy-pelosi-professes-ignorance-of.html>,
the former with a basic history lesson as to what the Church has
actually taught, the latter with a plea that Pelosi's botched
presentation constituted a "teaching moment" for the Catholic bishops:

Here you have a very prominent American Catholic, going on the
record with her purported studiousness on this issue,
authoritatively declaring something false about the teaching of the
    Catholic Church.

This is what we call a /teachable moment/. Monday morning, the USCCB
should have a press release, accompanied by a real human being -
preferably a bishop - maybe even a Colorado bishop, given the
location and the proximity of the press - giving a short, succinct
correction of Pelosi's statement. It wouldn't take long. Do it right
in front of where the convention is meeting.

Today, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver delivered -- in a
statement eloquently titled "On the Separation of Sense and State"

Likewise, Cardinal Justin F. Rigali, chairman of the U.S. Bishops'
Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop William E. Lori, chairman
of the U.S. Bishops' Committee on Doctrine issued a statement posted to
the main page of the website of the U.S. Catholic Bishops
<mailbox:///C%7C/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Thunderbird/defaults/profile/bo/Mail/Local%20Folders/Inbox?number=13895407>:

n the course of a "Meet the Press" interview on abortion and other
public issues on August 24, 2008, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
misrepresented the history and nature of the authentic teaching of
    the Catholic Church against abortion.

The Church has always taught that human life deserves respect from
its very beginning and that procured abortion is a grave moral evil.
In the Middle Ages, uninformed and inadequate theories about
embryology led some theologians to speculate that specifically human
life capable of receiving an immortal soul may not exist until a few
weeks into pregnancy. While in canon law these theories led to a
distinction in penalties between very early and later abortions, the
Church's moral teaching never justified or permitted abortion at any
    stage of development.

These mistaken biological theories became obsolete over 150 years
ago when scientists discovered that a new human individual comes
into being from the union of sperm and egg at fertilization. In
keeping with this modern understanding, the Church has long taught
that from the time of conception (fertilization), each member of the
human species must be given the full respect due to a human person,
beginning with respect for the fundamental right to life.

More information on the Church's teaching on this issue can be found
in our brochure "The Catholic Church is a Pro-Life Church". PDF

Receive Christ Worthily in the Eucharist

We'd like to thank Archbishop Chaput for his outstanding letter, and to
Cardinal Justin F. Rigali and Bishop William E. Lori for stepping up.
It's our furvent hope that this will establish something of a trend in
Bishops' responses to "pro-choice" Catholics who publicly misrepresent
and repudiate Catholic teaching.

"We are complicit in this" -- Bishop Michael Saltarelli on
      "pro-choice" Catholic politicians
      <http://catholicsagainstjoebiden.blogspot.com/2008/08/we-are-complicit-in-this-bishop-michael.html>

http://catholicsagainstjoebiden.blogspot.com/2008/08/we-are-complicit-in-this-bishop-michael.html
In 2005, /Ignatius Insight/ interviewed Bishop Michael Saltarelli of
Wilmington, DE. One of the topics discussed was the matter of Catholic
politicians who publicly take pro-abortion legislative positions, and
the efforts he was making to engage them:

*IgnatiusInsight.com: Last year, you wrote a statement on Catholics
in public life. [http://www.cdow.org/political.html] You said: "No
one today would accept this statement from any public servant: 'I am
personally opposed to human slavery and racism but will not impose
my personal conviction in the legislative arena.' Likewise, none of
us should accept this statement from any public servant: 'I am
personally opposed to abortion but will not impose my personal
    conviction in the legislative arena.'"*

*Bishop Saltarelli*: We hear that so often. It's such an excuse; to
me it's a cop out: "I'm personally opposed, but..." If someone would
say I'm personally opposed to slavery but its okay, people would
laugh at the ridiculousness of that statement. And yet we tolerate,
don't we--"I'm personally opposed to abortion, but..."? That "but"
is translated into the destruction, the massacre, the holocaust of
millions of innocent lives in our time.

*IgnatiusInsight.com*: You have lot of politicians in your neck of
the woods. [Among the pro-choice politicians who say they are
Catholic in Delaware are Sen. Joseph Biden (D) and U.S. Rep. Michael
Castle (R)--the bishop did not want to discuss any politicians by
name. Rep. Castle is the main sponsor of a bill that passed the
House and is now before the U.S. Senate to expand the use of frozen
in-vitro embryos for embryonic stem cell research.]

*Bishop Saltarelli*: Tell me about it, you've seen them on
television, I'm sure. That's what we're dealing with.

    <http://www.ignatiusinsight.com/features2005/vs_bsaltarelli1_sept05.asp>

*IgnatiusInsight.com*: How do you engage them?

*Bishop Saltarelli*: We do, again, without mentioning names. I have
been in conversation with them. I have invited them to dialogue and
it's painful for them. It really is, they're caught betwixt and
between. They somehow have bought the package: "You can be
personally opposed." And tragically, maybe some people who should
not have been advising, have advised, that it is alright to hold
that opinion, even as a Catholic.

/And I think some of these people are products of some of our--what
should I say?--our theologians of the past who got away with
proclaiming this kind of stuff and they were their teachers.
Tragically. And so, when you get so caught up in that and convinced
of the righteousness and the rightness of your position, it is hard
to dissuade--you know--"Who are you, bishop, against this teacher of
mine who said it was okay?" /

    /Respectfully, as I said. And I will continue to engage. I won't
give up on that. We pray./

We're issuing once again on October 1st for Right to Life month the
    Litany of St. Thomas More
    <http://www.ignatiusinsight.com/features2005/litany_stthomasmore_sept05.asp>
that we composed ourselves. It is a litany for politicians,
statesmen, and lawyers. And we hope by getting this prayer into the
hands of all of the people of our diocese that they will pray that
litany. More is wrought by prayer than by armies and battleships.

*[The Litany to St. Thomas More that *Bishop Saltarelli* composed
for the conversion of pro-abortion "Catholic" politicians was first
distributed to parishes last October 2004. The litany asks St.
Thomas More for his intercession to make politicians "courageous and
effective in their defense and promotion of the sanctity of human
    life."*

*IgnatiusInsight.com*: If you send the Litany to your parishes, do
the parishes automatically distribute it and talk about it?

*Bishop Saltarelli*: Oh yes, it is distributed. There is no doubt
about that. Now, some will cast it aside, some will see (this is
what we're dealing with) it as a violation of Church and state, the
fact we even dare pray for politicians. Because they get what they
say is a hidden message. But, that's okay; that doesn't stop us.
We're still going to do it. We're still going to ask our people to
    pray the Litany.

/I think for too long we have been silent and our people have taken
that silence as part of an acquiescence of the status quo. We are
complicit in this. So we have to step forward and say, "No, this is
not right--it is wrong, it is sinful"--and somebody at least has to
say it./ Not that I'm being the brave man. I have a magnificent team
here with me and wonderful people committed to the cause of life and
the Gospel of Life and we push forward together.

Strong Pro-Life Presence at Democratic National Convention

    By Thaddeus M. Baklinski

    http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/aug/08082507.html

    DENVER, August 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Democratic Party
will witness a large coalition of pro-life groups at their national
    convention which began August 22nd.

A wide range of pro-life activities and prayerful events, organized
under the name A Prayer For Change, is sponsored by the Christian
Defense Coalition, based in Washington, D.C., and the Survivors of
the Abortion Holocaust, a youth training and activism organization
    based in Riverside, California.

The National Clergy Council, one of the groups participating in A
Prayer For Change, reported, "In its first official event (a prayer
meeting held at the Wells Fargo Theater at Denver's Colorado
Convention Center) of the 2008 Democratic Convention, Pentecostal
preacher and Bishop Charles E. Blake of the Church of God in Christ,
took to the pulpit of an Interfaith Gathering and unequivocally
denounced abortion, saying God could not be pleased with millions of
lives being ended by elective abortion."

The president of the pro-life National Clergy Council, Rev. Rob
Schenck, who was present at the event, said, "This is an amazing
development. Bishop Blake was crystal clear in condemning abortion.
There was nothing subtle about it. He identified himself as a
pro-life Democrat and blatantly challenged his party's historic
position on abortion. He also challenged Barack Obama to pursue his
promise to reduce abortions and to ensure 'viable' alternatives.
Just this one moment is a significant turn for the Democratic Party."

Rev. Schenck said the hall, filled with several thousand, fell
uneasily silent as Blake spoke against abortion.

A notable venue of the pro-life activities at the convention will be
the "Children's Wall," which is part of the security fence
surrounding the Pepsi Center, where pro-life activists will leave
hundreds of flowers as a physical reminder of the innocent children
that have died from abortion and the women that have been wounded
    through abortion.

Other events scheduled for the convention include peaceful
demonstrations displaying large pro-life signs along Denver's 16th
Street Mall, a demonstration and protest at the National
Organization for Women's Equality Tea to be held at the University
Club at 1673 Sherman Street, and a rally and vigil with Dr. Alveda
King at Martin Luther King Park. Dr. King will speak out against
Black Genocide through abortion. This will be followed by a march to
    Planned Parenthood.

Operation Rescue's fleet of Truth Trucks will also be prominently
touring through the streets of Denver.

The pro-life youth group Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, which
is a Christian, pro-life activism organization dedicated to
educating and activating high school and college age individuals,
will be holding numerous special events focused on giving young
adults the opportunity to peacefully challenge those in favor of
abortion, and to "engage in prophetic witness to the Democratic
Party, the City of Denver, and the entire United States."
